Self-Employment Benefit Frequently Asked Questions FAQ!

Get Some Answers Now:

I can´t find work in this region, but I have a business idea that I believe would work in the Boundary. What do I need to do to explore the Self Employment Benefit Program?

The Self-Employment Program is a referral program; therefore, your first step would be to book an appointment with an Employment Services Counsellor in either the Greenwood or Grand Forks office. The Employment Services Counsellor will work with you to determine your eligibility for the Self-Employment Benefit Program and if a referral is appropriate will provide that referral to the Self-Employment Benefit Program Coordinator or Counsellor.

I already own a business but have been talking to people who have gone through the Self-Employment Program that Community Futures has and would like to access those supports for my business, would I be eligible for program benefits?

The Self-Employment Benefits program is designed to assist Employment Insurance attached (currently on or have had an active claim in the past three years or 5 years for parental/maternity claim if one has not returned to the workforce) unemployed individuals in creating employment for themselves by launching a “new to you” business. Eligibility must be established and a referral from an Employment Counsellor is also required. Individuals who have started or currently operate a business are not eligible for the Self-Employment Program, however, Community Futures has resources and other programs that may assist business owners.

I have a great business idea and have discussed with my Employment Counsellor a referral to the Self-Employment Benefit Program, but I haven´t written a formal document ever..is there assistance in writing a business plan?

Self-Employment staff will work with you in developing your business plan. Resources, referrals, and one/one assistance will be made available to individuals who have a viable business idea.

My Employment Counsellor tells me I have to have an investment into the business I want to establish. I am on Employment Insurance and money is really tight, how can I invest into a business?

The Self-Employment Benefits program does require a personal financial investment into the business being established, however, that investment may be in the form of cash, assets (equipment/tools owned) in lieu of cash. Business loans are also considered for the investment criteria as well.
